From Freedom Shores to Whitehaven: TDM’s Guide to a Whitsundays Wedding

Professional videography capturing outdoor wedding celebration

A waterfront celebration at Freedom Shores or a helicopter arrival for an intimate Whitehaven elopement: a Whitsundays wedding can take very different shapes. At TDM, those choices matter to the story we capture. The right venue, planner and photography and videography team should work together to give you time to enjoy the day.

Freedom Shores and Whitehaven are two of our favourites. Here is how we would approach choosing your setting and the people behind it, with a few other destination options worth comparing.

Freedom Shores

Freedom Shores, at Woodwark near Airlie Beach, combines a waterfront setting with boutique accommodation and several ceremony and reception spaces. Its Beach Shack, Homestead and exclusive resort options give couples different ways to shape the celebration.

For us, the appeal is the combination of coastal scenery and a place for the day to unfold. Fewer moves between locations can mean more time with your guests and a calmer window for portraits. See Emma and Jackson’s Freedom Shores wedding for a real TDM example, from their celebration to the moments in between.

Freedom Shores operates as a dry-hire wedding venue and works with its partnered planner, Euphoric Event Producers. Confirm the current planning, catering and weather-backup arrangements directly before booking.

Whitehaven Beach elopements

Whitehaven offers a different experience: white silica sand, island scenery and a ceremony that can feel like an adventure. It is one of our favourite settings for an intimate elopement, particularly when couples want the journey to be part of the story.

In Lisa and Ewan’s Whitehaven elopement, TDM filmed a helicopter trip to the beach after their original larger wedding could not go ahead. Their story shows how a smaller ceremony can still make a memorable wedding film.

Whitehaven is a public national-park setting. Build the plan around access, transfer times, tides, wind and a workable alternative if conditions change. Ask your planner and transport operator to confirm any permissions needed for your particular ceremony through Queensland Parks’ permit guidance. A beach ceremony should not be planned on the assumption that the beach will be private.

Coral Sea Resort

Coral Sea Resort offers ceremony settings including its upper lawn, jetty and beach, with reception choices that include a ballroom and terrace. It is worth considering if you want an Airlie Beach resort setting and a mix of outdoor and indoor spaces. Ask how the weather plan affects your ceremony, reception and portrait schedule.

Hayman Island

InterContinental Hayman Great Barrier Reef is another option for couples considering an island-resort wedding. Compare the complete guest experience: travel, accommodation, celebration spaces and the time everyone spends on the island. Discuss crew transfers and access alongside your guest arrangements so photography and filming fit the itinerary.

Choosing your wedding planner

We recommend considering Euphoric Event Producers. Their Whitsundays planning services offer different levels of support, from help for couples who have already organised suppliers through to more comprehensive planning and coordination. They are also Freedom Shores’ partnered wedding planner.

Choose the level of support around what you actually need. If you are planning from interstate, island transfers and local supplier coordination may be major priorities. If you have booked most of the day already, you may need someone to manage the running order and decisions on the day. Review Euphoric’s current services and ask who will be your point of contact, what is included and how they handle a change of plan.

Choosing your photo and video team

A beautiful highlight reel is a starting point. Ask to see complete galleries and longer wedding films so you can judge how a team handles the whole day: bright beaches, quieter preparation moments, the ceremony and the reception after dark.

Look for an approach that feels like you. Discuss whether you prefer gentle direction or a more observational style, how much time you want for portraits, and how photography and videography will work together. For film, ask specifically about recording vows and speeches; clear sound is part of preserving those moments.

  • Coverage: confirm start and finish times, crew numbers and which parts of the day are included.
  • Deliverables: clarify the photographs and films you will receive, delivery timing and any additional options.
  • Destination logistics: confirm travel costs, accommodation requirements and transfer plans before committing.
  • The running order: have your planner and media team agree on ceremony timing, portrait time and the light available at your chosen setting.

At TDM, our Whitsundays wedding photography and videography is about documenting the people, atmosphere and place together. Our wedding stories give you real examples to explore before deciding whether our work suits your celebration.

Before booking, decide what matters most: a relaxed mainland celebration, a small beach elopement or an island stay with your favourite people. Then choose the venue and team that can make that plan work. The strongest photographs and films begin with a day that gives you space to be present.
