Project Overview
Reef HQ Townsville partnered with TDM to capture a final behind-the-scenes look at the facility in full operation before closing its doors for major renovations. The brief covered on-camera interviews and personal reflections from staff across departments, brought together into a video and photography campaign to engage the local community ahead of the facility’s transformation.
From marine biologists to educational guides, every team member had a voice in the final piece — content designed to honour Reef HQ’s legacy and build awareness for what comes next.
About the Client
Reef HQ is the world’s largest living coral reef aquarium, located in Townsville and operated as a flagship marine education facility under the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA). Since opening in 1987, it has introduced generations of visitors to the reef’s ecosystem, closing in 2021 for a major redevelopment ahead of its planned reopening.

Reef HQ used the campaign to engage the Townsville community and build awareness ahead of the facility’s closure, giving staff across departments a voice in the transition. TDM’s relationship with Reef HQ and GBRMPA continues as the facility moves through its redevelopment.
For TDM, this project reflects the ability to turn a straightforward video brief into genuine community storytelling — coordinating across many staff departments to capture authentic, on-camera reflections.
